The future is Huntsville’s brand, but the city’s newest thing, a business called BitBros, is breaking ground even here. The brain child of two young men from Huntsville and one from Birmingham, BitBros serves the growing online phenomena known as blockchain and the cryptocurrencies that are traded using blockchain.
What is blockchain? If you’re not sure, read on for enough explanation to possibly make you more curious. And if you do know, here’s what BitBros is offering. Basically, it’s hosting. Hosting in a large, well-ventilated building on the city’s west side the computers that play a key role in the growing cryptocurrency and blockchain online spaces. There are benefits, company founders say, from having one well-connected place to run these computers, starting with lower power costs and more-efficient machines.
“These are the computers that secure the blockchain network,” the company’s technology officer Jmo, explained in a recent interview. Jmo has multiple degrees from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in science and business.
The blockchain network is an online ledger used to store data such as contracts. A blockchain’s main feature is that its blocks of data can’t be altered after they are closed. That means the records they contain cannot be altered after the fact, either, and that makes a blockchain an answer to the question, “Can we really trust this computer?”
